Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes the uterus through small incisions in the abdomen. It's also known as a keyhole surgery.

What happens during the procedure?

  • The surgeon inserts a thin tube with a camera (endoscope) through one incision.
  • The surgeon uses the endoscope to view the pelvic organs on a monitor.
  • The surgeon uses small surgical tools through the other incisions to remove the uterus.

What are the benefits?

  • A laparoscopic hysterectomy requires smaller incisions than a traditional hysterectomy.
  • Patients recover more quickly.

What to expect after the procedure?

  • You may need to take pain medicine regularly.
  • It may take at least 4 to 6 weeks to feel completely better.
  • You may need to avoid strenuous activities, such as biking, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercise.
  • You may need to hold a pillow over your incisions when you cough or take deep breaths.

When to contact your doctor?

  • In case of fever, excessive pain, sudden loss of blood, or inability to pass urine, contact your doctor immediately.
